The Sonor Foundation
Trans and gender-diverse communities have long faced systemic underfunding from both governments and philanthropic organizations, despite repeated calls for targeted support and investment. Currently, just 4 cents of every $100 granted by U.S. foundations is directed toward trans communities. A 2022 study found that approximately 0.5% of the U.S. adult population—around 1.3 million people—identify as transgender. In Canada, there is a lack of detailed data on financial support directed to 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders and communities, with no specific information available for trans communities.
This report presents findings from the 2023 Transcend Impact Challenge, a $2.1 million initiative aimed at supporting trans and gender-diverse communities throughout Canada. It outlines the specific needs of these communities, highlights the vital work being done by organizations serving them, and urges funders to increase their support. The Transcend Impact Challenge was initiated by The Sonor Foundation in collaboration with several partner organizations, including the World Education Services Mariam Assefa Fund, Ontario Trillium Foundation, United Church of Canada Foundation, Chamandy Foundation, The Counselling Foundation of Canada, Canadian Women’s Foundation, Toronto Foundation, and the Martha LA McCain Foundation.
