GPP Event Pages Elevate Children’s Funding Group and GPP Joint Member Telebriefing, February 6

Member Telebriefing on Global LGBTI+ and Children/Youth Rights

This telebriefing will be an opportunity for Elevate Children Funders Group (ECFG) and Global Philanthropy Project (GPP) members to discuss how funders can put LGBTI+ children and youth on the international agenda. ECFG and GPP will also discuss their proposal to jointly conduct a research initiative later this year, to serve as the foundational contribution to inform future grantmaking strategies of both GPP and ECFG members and is intended as a tool for those aiming to support LGBTI+ children and youth confront and overcome discrimination and neglect. This research will help to inform a proposed convening of key concerned grantmakers and thought leaders.

On 28 February 2017,  ECFG and GPP co-sponsored a discussion on international LGBTI and children and youth’s rights.  This telebriefing explored the role of funders in supporting sexual and gender self-determination of children and youth. By partnering, ECFG (a funders group focused on children facing adversity) and GPP (a funders group focused on international LGBTI issues) drew on respective members’ interests, areas of expertise, and strengths to have a discussion on how funders can put LGBTI and gender non-conforming (LGBTI+) children and youth on the international agenda.

This last year, both ECFG and GPP staff have continued the discussions with their respective members and it is clear from these discussions that there is an interest to learn and engage around these issues and continue the joint membership conversations, virtually and in-person. In addition, there is an interest and need for a mapping of grantmaking and programming in relations to the rights of children and young people who are LGBTI+ and to elevate the voices, rights, and experiences of this overlooked and neglected population group.
