New research from AJWS, Astraea, GATE and GPP:

THE STATE OF INTERSEX ORGANIZING (2ND EDITION)
&
THE STATE OF TRANS ORGANIZING (2ND EDITION)

Across every region of the world, trans and intersex people face unacceptably high levels of violence and discrimination. Intersex and trans movements are fighting back, but their progress is hampered and their leaders risk burnout because they have very little funding. New research by American Jewish World Service, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice and Global Action for Trans Equality shows that trans and intersex groups have very limited budgets, minimal staffing and pressing capacity building needs. The reports, containing data from 455 trans groups and 54 intersex groups in 107 countries around the world, are a call to action for civil society and philanthropy to step up our collective support.

Inspired by the Jewish commitment to justice, American Jewish World Service (AJWS) works to realize human rights and end poverty in the developing world. Rooted in our mission, AJWS was founded in 1985 by American Jews who wanted to join together as global citizens to help some of the poorest and most oppressed people around the globe. Today, AJWS is the only Jewish organization dedicated solely to ending poverty and promoting human rights in the developing world. AJWS started as a small organization, but now raises more than $50 million a year. And since its founding, AJWS has provided more than $230 million to support thousands of social justice organizations in the developing world that have taken on some of the biggest global challenges of our time. Today, AJWS is one of the top human rights funders in the world, and is the 4th largest U.S.-based funder of international LGBT rights work.
The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is the only philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQI rights around the globe. Through grantmaking, capacity building and leadership development, philanthropic advocacy and media and communications, we support hundreds of brilliant and brave grantee partners in the U.S. and internationally who challenge oppression and seed social change. We work for racial, economic, social and gender justice, because we all deserve to live our lives freely, without fear and with profound dignity. Astraea launched the Intersex Human Rights Fund as a core program in 2015 and serves as the fiscal host for the International Trans Fund.
GATE’s mission is to work internationally on gender identity, gender expression, and bodily issues by defending human rights, making available critical knowledge, and supporting political organizing worldwide. GATE envisions a world free of human rights violations based on gender identity, gender expression and bodily diversity, and transformed by the critical inclusion of those historically marginalized on those grounds. We will contribute to building powerful, expert and well-resourced political movements, able to have meaningful participation in global processes and to transform the landscape of socioeconomic justice worldwide.
Global Philanthropy Project (GPP) is a collaboration of funders and philanthropic advisors working to expand global philanthropic support to advance the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people in the Global South and East.

The Intersex Human Rights Fund
A program of Astraea, supports organizations, projects and timely campaigns led by intersex activists working to ensure the human rights, bodily autonomy, physical integrity and self-determination of intersex people.

The International Trans Fund (ITF) is a new activist and funder-led initiative. The ITF aims to increase the capacity of the trans movement to self-organize and advocate for trans people’s rights, self-determination, and wellbeing.
