Government Relations Advisor

Position Summary

The Global Philanthropy Project, Inc. (GPP) Government Relations Advisor plays an important role in advancing GPP’s work engaging and influencing the LGBTI funding strategies, programs and practices of the world’s leading government and multilateral donor agencies. The role will focus on producing cutting-edge strategic analysis and research on the field of global LGBTI philanthropy and international development assistance, and working with other GPP colleagues to convene and conduct direct engagement with government and multilateral donors.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, politically savvy, highly dedicated and resourceful, can work well independently and collaboratively, and is committed to contributing to advancing the rights of LGBTI people globally. This position reports to the  Director of Government Relations and Field Engagement. This position is 100% remote and will require up to 30% overseas travel. Global Philanthropy Project, Inc. (GPP) is a collaboration of funders and philanthropic advisors working to expand global philanthropic support to advance the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people, particularly in the Global South and East.

Established in 2009, GPP’s 22 member organizations include many of the leading global funders and philanthropic advisors for LGBTI rights. As the first international cohort of LGBTI funders, GPP is internationally recognized as the primary thought leader and go-to partner for donor coordination around global LGBTI work.

In order to achieve the goal of increasing the amount and quality of resources flowing to the global LGBTI movement, particularly in the Global South and East, GPP has evolved into a field influencing organization that includes a strong focus on targeting the funding strategies and practices of the leading government and multilateral donor agencies.

Essential Job Functions

• Undertake ongoing research and analysis of the funding strategies, programs and practices of the leading government and multilateral agencies supporting global LGBTI rights.
• Collaborate with the Director, Government Relations and Field Engagement and the GPP Director to implement direct engagement strategies with key  donor governments, as well as civil society actors that are seeking to influence them. This includes developing tailored advisory briefs and presentations (both virtual and in capital).
• Develop and maintain an online resource providing information on each of the government and multilateral donors supporting global LGBTI issues, that will include key LGBTI funding data as well as overview of the key policies, strategies and agencies that inform each donors’ LGBTI grantmaking
• Work with GPP’s research team to cultivate and analyze data submissions from government and multilateral donor agencies to GPP’s bi-annual tracking report, the Global Resources Report. Work with the Director of Government Relations and Field Engagementand GPP Director to assess how such data can inform GPP’s donor engagement strategies.
• Produce a webinar series for donor governments focusing on key themes from the bi-annual Global Resources Report and other GPP and field research
• Work with the Director of Government Relations and Field Engagementand GPP Director, to cultivate and facilitate donor government only spaces at key movement conferences, enabling them to discuss diplomatic and development assistance strategies for addressing violence, discrimination and persecution of LGBTI communities
• Support the GPP Executive Director and the Director of Government Relations and Field Engagementto participate in key external forums.
• Support the development of communications on GPP’s government relations work to members and external audiences through drafting language for newsletters, listserv emails, and digital media communications.
• Collaborate with other GPP colleagues development of fundraising applications and meetings to secure resources for GPP’s Government Relations work
• Support the Director of Government Relations and Field Engagement to manage key advisory structures for GPP’s Government Relations work
• Support other organization activities and events as needed, and other administrative duties as assigned.

Special Skills and Knowledge

The ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

• Five plus years of relevant work experience in government relations, international development, human rights and /or philanthropic advocacy, policy or research.
• Demonstrated capacity to employ sophisticated political judgment and flexibility in responding to opportunities and shifting external environments.
• High-level analytical skills, with demonstrated experience in producing policy materials and conducting desk research to inform advocacy strategies.
• Knowledge of the key government and multilateral donors and an understanding of the domestic political systems that influence their operation.
• Experience engaging with, and successfully influencing policy decision-makers.
• Knowledge of the global LGBTI social justice landscape.
• Knowledge of the international philanthropic landscape.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies and audiences.
• Ability to work asynchronously with global staff and stakeholders.
• Well-organized and detail-oriented, with excellent multi-tasking abilities.
• Excellent with the following technology platforms: Google Workspace, Zoom, Asana, and WordPress.
• Demonstrated commitment to the work and values of the Global Philanthropy Project.

Reporting

This position reports to the Director of Government Relations and Field Engagement.

Hours + Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position with a 35-hour work week. This role is 100% remote, with the requirement of  2-4 international trips per year.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $85,000 USD.  Benefits include fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums, retirement options, and paid time off.
