Engaging Government and Multilateral Funders
GPP is regularly engaged by donor governments to provide private briefings and presentations on the global LGBTI funding landscape, drawing on our research analysis and member expertise.
We support donor governments in assessing and improving their funding strategies and practices, including through targeted research, so that the future of international cooperation is more inclusive of LGBTI rights and better answers the needs of LGBTI movements globally.
Some examples of our work in this area:
- On 1 March 2022 at the Sydney WorldPride Human Rights Conference, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced Australia’s first dedicated fund for LGBTQIA+ rights in Asia and the Pacific, the A$3.5m Inclusion and Equality Fund. She also announced the development of a first-ever dedicated Australian LGBTQIA+ human rights in foreign policy strategy.
- Following a number of years of strategic engagement with the UK Government, led by the GPP member, the Baring Foundation, and GPP’s Government Relations team, a new commitment of £40m for LGBTI rights worldwide was announced by the UK Minister of State (Development and Africa), Rt. Hon Andrew Mitchell, at the first UK LGBTQI Global Giving Summit on 22 November 2023.
- GPP’s Government Relations team has worked with the Canadian government on the implementation and continuation of its LGBTI International Assistance Programme, with specific recommendations issued in 2024 on Canada’s leadership after the first phase of the programme comes to an end in 2025.
